The main character is named Ichigo Kurosaki, he's 15 years old and a first year in high school. He's always been able to see and touch spirits. He's got a semi-normal home life, for an anime anyway. His dad, Isshin, owns his own small clinic and is a total nut-job. It's hard to explain so I wont. Ichigo has two little sisters, Yuzu and Karin, who are four years younger than he is. Karin is a tomboy who has some ability to see ghosts and Yuzu is a very capable girl who took over the household chores after the death of Masaki Kurosaki, their mother.
Ichigo is a tough kid who knows his way around a fight. He's quiet without being rude and you find out that he's pretty smart. While he's helping a spirit pass on he encouters a Shinigami, Death God, who guides spirits to Soul Society, the great beyond.

He also encounters a huge, and wierd looking, monster called a hollow, who was drawn to his town (Karakura) by Ichigo's huge spirit energy, which is what they feed on. While trying to protect his family, the Shinigami was injured and passed her powers to Ichigo, who killed the hollow.--End Spoiler--
This story arc focuses on how Ichigo deals with these new powers and eventually gets stronger.I highly reccomend this anime to people who liked YuYu Hakusho but wanted a little more blood and guts. I'm also told that if you like Naruto, which I dont, that you'll like this anime. Personally, I'm more into Shojo like Ouran Kokou Host Club, but I loved it because it's JUST SO COOL!!
The manga is excellent but follows a slightly different line than the anime. There is a filler storyline in the anime that starts around episode 65 that is not in the manga so be careful.
